Payload Local API

The Payload Local API is a way to read and write content directly in your code, without sending a request over the internet.

Think of it like this: normally, a website asks a separate server for data (via an API). That is a bit like calling a friend to ask what is in the fridge. The Local API is more like just opening the fridge yourself — the data is right there, in the same process.

For developers, this means faster code and fewer moving parts. For visitors, it means the website loads faster, because the system does not need extra network calls to fetch content.

I use the Local API in my Next.js + Payload projects to keep the sites light and quick.
